Adoption Alert

This weeks adoption alert (adoptable animal spotlight) is Gomer. He is a one-year-old hound mix who is outgoing, playful, and sweet. Gomer would do best in a home with other dogs for him to play with. He has all his vaccinations and is neutered. He was brought to the shelter on August 26, 2021 and was left there as a stray. I talked to Mariam Bradly who works at the Bartlett Animal Shelter, and he said that someone should be inspired to adopt from an animal shelter because it helps them do their job better. He explains “That way we can make space for other animals.” He also said that they get 5 animals a week in on average with only three of them getting adopted each week! Right now, there’s a huge need for adoption in shelters. For more information on Gomer or other animals at the shelter you can contact them at (901) 385-6484.

Employees Who Tried To Suppress The News Outlets and Report Show

Welcome back to another article, and this time, it’s all about how Facebook

And how some of there employees tried to Suppress the News Outlets

And Report Show. So, we all know Facebook is popular, and that it has a show and stuff, and one of the reason why the employees tried to suppress this new stuff is because the tech giant’s employees have consistently pushed to suppress or de-platform right-wing outlets such as Breitbart, despite objections from managers trying to avoid political blowback, a scathing report by the Wall Street Journal revealed, also according to the article, “ The internal debates — captured in message-board conversations reviewed by the publication — fuel new concerns that the platform is treating news outlets differently based on political slant.”  There was a special focus in the report, and it was on Breitbart. Another thing to add to this is the “Strikes.” This showed by 2020, Facebook had begun keeping track of "strikes" for content deemed false by third-party fact-checkers. Repeated offenders could be suspended from posting. Escalations came more frequently against conservative outlets, according to the report. They probably did this if like somebody posted inappropriate things, with abusive language, etc. Thank you for reading this week’s feature article! If you guys would like  a part 2 to this, please  sure to subscribe to BLMS Newspaper, and I’ll deliver , Bye!

What Students are Doing for Halloween

Hello Lynx! Today I wanted to tell you what 1 student at Bon Lin are doing for halloween

Today I interviewed Joy. She is in 6th grade. She said that Halloween makes her excited to trick or treat. I first asked her, “What are her and maybe her family doing for Halloween?” She responded with, “I am going to trick or treat honestly.” I went on to ask her, “Why do you like Halloween?” Her response to the question is, “Free candy, I also get to dress up.” To me, these responses sound like Joy, is going have a GREAT time. Another question that I asked her was, “Why do you think others should celebrate Halloween?” She said, “Because it’s so fun.” So, in my opinion non-celebraters should celebrate Halloween. Finally, I asked her , “What would you rate Halloween from one (being the worst) and ten (being the best)” She said, “10 being the BEST‼”

So, Lynx, what are you doing for Halloween? Have a great day Lynx‼

Tim burton

Tim burton is an American film maker. He was born on August 25,1958 in     Burbank, California, at the time of this issue, he is 63 years old.

He is known for his original, quirky style that drew on elements of the         fantastic and the macabre.

He has written many classics like, corpse bride, Coraline etc.

His greatest inspirations were creators like Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl.

He also wrote the classic Halloween movie

 Nightmare before Christmas.

This article will focus on this movie from 1993.

He got his first inspiration  when Tim saw Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display, this gave him the idea of Halloween with Christmas mix.

But unfortunately, he couldn’t make this movie on his own because of being busy, so he passed the work to Henry Selick.

Robert The Doll

Have you ever experienced that feeling that something is watching you, or that an inanimate object came to life? In Key West, people might have never felt that feeling, but have also felt it when viewing Robert, the Doll. You might be wondering who is Robert the doll, why do people care about him, and what is his story? Well, in this article we will exploring how this seemly cute sailor doll terrorized Eugene (the owner) and his family.

The story about Robert begins in early nineteen hundred when a young boy was given a handmade doll by a servant who worked for his parents. Eugene, who was called Gene by everyone, named the doll Robert, and he got attached to his new friend every quickly.

At 534 Easton Street Eugene was given Robert, and their friendship last for his entire life and much longer. At first Robert seemed like an ordinary doll, but it didn’t take long at all until he started doing terrifying events. One night when Gene was ten years old, he awoke to find Robert staring at him from the end of his bed. A few moments later, Gene’s mother woke up from hearing her son screaming for help and the sound of furniture being thrown around in his room. Gene was crying for help, begging for his mom to save him. She was finally able to wrench the door open, and she found her son curled up in fear on his bed, his room was a disaster and Robert was at the end of his bed.

No one knows why or how Robert could do any of this. After all it’s just a toy. The weirdness didn’t stop after that one event. Eugene’s parents would go upstairs, and they would hear him talking to the doll and there would be a completely different voice talking back; they also reported seeing Robert speak and witnessing him changing his expressions. There were also reports of him giggling and sights of Robert running up the steps or staring out the upstairs window.

Robert lived with Gene throughout his lifetime, and after Gene’s parents died, he moved back into their home with Anne, his wife. After they moved in Gene decided that Robert needed a room to himself, and Gene put him in the upstairs room that had a window overlooking the street. Ann felt unsettled with Robert in the house; even though she couldn’t find out what it was, she wanted Gene to lock Robert in the attic so he couldn’t cause any harm. Gene conceded and as anyone could guess, Robert was not happy about this. Soon people visiting Gene and Ann heard footsteps in the attic, and along with the sound of someone pacing back and forth. People also heard a devilish giggling from the attic when visiting.  Children in the neighborhood seeing Robert watching them from the widow in the upstairs bedroom, and there were reports of him mocking the children as they walked to school. When Gene heard about all this, he went to investigate for himself; he knew that he’d locked Robert in the attic, so there was no way he could’ve been sitting by the widow in the bedroom upstairs. To his surprise, when he opened the door, Robert was sitting in the rocking chair by the window. Gene kept locking Robert in the attic, but every time he did so, Robert would escape to the rocking chair in the same bedroom by the widow.

Gene Otto (the owner of Robert) died in 1974, and when a new own moved into the house on Eton Street, their ten-year-old daughter found Robert in the attic. She was delighted to find him there, but that ended very soon when she claimed Robert was alive. She said that he wanted to hurt her; she often woke up in the middle of the night screaming in fear and she told her parents that Robert had moved around the room. It wasn’t long after that Robert was given away.

Do you think Robert is possessed? Many people believe that the origin of the evil that lies in Robert was put there by the person who first gave him to Gene, the servant who worked for Gene’s parents. The woman who gave Gene Robert was supposedly mistreated by his parents, and to punish them it’s believed that she used the doll with Voodoo and Black Magic. It might explain all the mysterious and frightening experiences every that meet or saw Robert had, but if this happened wouldn’t it end once Gene had died? No one knows for sure. One thing remains constant, and that is that Robert still taunts and scares everyone who comes to see him; he especially does it to the quests who try to take photos of him. Many people that have tried to take a photo of him reported their cameras stop working when they tried to take a photo of him, but it starts to work once they left the museum. Staff member have reported Robert’s facial expression changing, hearing demonic giggles from him, and seeing Robert put his hand up on the glass.

Even though Robert sits in a glass case, it doesn’t seem to stop him from inflicting fear to museum staff and visitors.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is a very important week for many people around the nation. Red Ribbon Week is about drug awareness and keeping people safe by staying away from drugs. Many schools celebrate Red Ribbon Week by having daily events. Some of events are hosting assemblies, they may wear red ribbons, they may have specific dress up days, and some schools post drug prevention facts. All these activities keep students interested and help the learn about the benefits of staying away from drugs.

Bon Lin Middle also celebrates Red Ribbon Week. Mrs. Mogy, one half of the counseling team, said that they have many events planned. Students will be able to participate in a door decorating contest, trivia questions, dress up days, and they will be able to decorate Kroger bags. These activities are to help students aware of keeping a drug free life. Mrs. Mogy and everyone else at the school would like students to be aware of this message.

This week, I bought various Christmas candy and drinks including Skittles, Mike and Ikes, Nerds, Pretzels, Hershey’s kisses and bars, Trolli gummies, gummy lifesavers , blue raspberry lemonade, and seltzer water. Me, Emma Ray, and Taylor Moore, had our fellow newspaper staff try them out! Keep on reading to find out their mixed guesses and responses!

First up[MTD1]  we have newspaper and orchestra teacher Mrs. Smith. She guessed that the skittles were strawberry, green apple, and watermelon flavored, but couldn’t quite pinpoint what the pink skittle flavor was! As for the Mike and Ikes, she guessed that the dark green one was green apple, and the light green was lime flavored. Next, she guessed that the Hershey’s kiss was white chocolate flavored, and the Hershey’s bar was chocolate flavored with almonds. Finally, she guessed that the pretzels were white chocolate covered. Overall, Mrs. Smith did well guess[MTD2]  the candy flavors!

Next, we have some student responses! First[MTD3]  went 6th grader Emma Schrier. She guessed that the drink was seltzer and fruit punch, the pretzels were vanilla yogurt dip, the life savers were grape/ berry flavored, the skittles were wild berry, the Hershey kiss was sugar cookie, the gummies were cherry, and the Hershey bar was milk chocolate with almonds. Emma S[MTD4]  did well[MTD5] ! Next[MTD6]  went 7th grader Luke fletcher[MTD7] . He guessed that the Hershey’s chocolate bar was chocolate with rice crisps, the Hershey’s kiss was white chocolate, and that the drink was like a cup of fruit sugar. Finally, went 8th grader Joey Hu. She said that the drink was blue raspberry sparkling cider, the mike and ikes were cherry, lime, and blue raspberry, the trollis and lifesavers were strawberry, and the skittles were grape and cherry !

All in all, the Christmas candy taste test was a success! That’s it for[MTD8]  Christmas themed articles! Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Christmas Around the World

Luke Fletcher

12/10/21

Even though everyone may not celebrate Christmas, let’s see how other countries may celebrate the Winter Holiday. The first country is Belgium, and it relates the most to American Christmas. There Santa is called Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas, who brings presents on December 5th and 6th. These two days are called St. Nicholas’ Eve and St. Nicholas’ Day. Before he visits, Children will put their shoes in front of the fireplace and receive candy, like stockings. They will leave treats such as oranges, gingerbread, and chocolate

Christmas is not as important in Russia, but there is a reason for this. When the Soviet Union was still in power, they banned Christmas and Christmas Trees. They did this because they had a policy of atheism and thought Christmas was a pointless holiday. Even after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, it was still a quiet holiday. If people do celebrate, they spend lots of money on drinking and eating, and Grandfather Frost delivers presents. These celebrations take place on January 7th. Even though people may celebrate a different holiday around this time, it is a very important holiday to most.

The Jetpack Mystery Man

After Halloween we thought the spookiness and scariness was all over until next year, but recently there have been multiple sightings of the so called “Jet Pack Mystery Man”. The picture below is just one of the sightings of the creature in Los Angles, California. Oddly enough, the videos and photos captured showed no human at all. In fact, they appear to be more like Jack Skellington form Tim Burtons “The Nightmare before Christmas”, but can it be? The first sighting occurred in August of 2020 by a Pilot for American Airlines. The pilots now refer to him as “Iron Man” Since then, there have been multiple other sightings. The FBI states that “The FBI has worked closely with the FFA to investigate reported jetpack sightings in the Los Angeles area, none of which have been verified. One working theory is that pilots have seen balloons.” Since Monday, no arrests or charges have been made involving the case. So, is it possible? Is Jack Skellington really floating around in the sky? What do you think?

Little Things That Make A Big Difference

You never know what someone is going through. They could have just lost a loved one, lost a pet, found out they had to move, the list goes on and on; the point is that you should try to be nice to everyone because everyone is going through something. You’ve probably talked to someone today that was putting on a smile for everyone, but on the inside they’re full of sorrow and heartbreak; perhaps you didn’t realize until just now. You don’t have to go all out to make someone feel better. You could simple give them a smile, or you could sit with them at lunch. There are many little things you could do to make someone feel better. This goes for parents too; you never know what they went through at work, and after work they have to come home and take care of everyone and everything at the house. As far as doing things for your parents you could clean a little, help take care of the pets, offer to help with dinner, or just spend some time with them. Now for someone at school or wherever you are you can’t go to their house and help them with stuff, but you can talk to them, let them know they’re not alone, ask them if they need help with anything, or play with them when you have free time at school. You never know if you two will become friends, and if you’re friends with someone that has to put on a smile you could simple be there for them, do a craft together, leave them a handwritten note, get ice cream together, go outside and play, or you could just hear them out.  As far as text goes, you could send a text that says one failure doesn’t define anyone you’ve already achieved (list accomplishments), don’t let anyone tell you how to feel you definitely didn’t ask to feel this way, this happens to everyone not everyone deals with it as well as you, or you could send them a funny video or GIF. There are many more things that you could to make people feel better; these are just a few ideas.  All in all, there are many things you can do, and you never know how big of an impact it could make in someone’s life.

Mask Mandate Dropped

Due to the lowering Covid cases, the mask mandate for Shelby County has been lifted. Tennessee lawmakers have gotten rid of the mask mandate for most places except public schools. The case numbers have changed drastically from 1,295 cases on September 8th to 78 cases on October 27th. Even though they have lifted the mandate for businesses and other places, Schools still must wear masks. Schools must wear masks due to the health and safety of students and teachers, but there is a heated discussion whether schools should have to wear masks or not.

The CDC highly recommends for students, staff, and visitors, to wear a mask in school, but some Tennessean parents do not agree. For example, Governor Bill Lee tried ordering parents to have the option of letting their child wear a mask to school. This caused support from some parents, but most parents were a bit skeptical.  While some might be in favor of the order, there could be some issues with it. If some children went to school without a mask, they could be in danger of getting Covid or giving it to other students. The order could be put in place, but it is unlikely due to it be denied 3 times. Thank you for reading and subscribe to read more.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose - the True Story (TW: gore)

Have you ever heard of the movie “The Exorcism of Emily Rose?” Well, the chilling, horrifying 2005 release imitates the real-life story of Anneliese Michel, her exorcism, and the legal actions taken upon her family and priest.  In this week’s feature article, we will explore this disturbing case of an exorcism, taking a turn for a worst.

In 1970’s, after having a short battle with epilepsy and put on anti-convulsion drugs, Anneliese started to hear supposed voices. After slipping into a severe state of depression and psychosis, her extremely catholic parents enlisted in in the help of priests Arnold Renz and Ernst Alt. After an evaluation of the troubled teen, Alt was convinced that she was possessed by demonic spirits. After the two gained permission from a local bishop, the two priest began to perform 4-hour exorcisms on the teen once or twice a week. She would be chained to a chair and exposed to exorcist techniques. Because of the religious trauma inflicted on Anneliese, she began to starve herself and grew weak.

After 11 harrowing months and an astonishing 63 exorcisms later, Anneliese succumbed to her weak body and died at 23 years old. Her official causes of death were malnutrition and dehydration. After her death, her parents and the two priests were sent to trial. Even after showing their dubious evidence of demons arguing in the room next to Anneliese, all were found guilty of negligent homicide. Unfortunately, they were all given short sentences.

Overall, this was a chilling story with an angering end. If you would like to watch the movie based on this story, it is titled “The Exorcism of Emily Rose “, and is available on YouTube, Prime video, Apple TV, and Google Play. Stay tuned Lynx for the final edition of the Halloween features and as always, be respectful, responsible, and ready!

Flavors of candy that will blow your mind

This week Emma Ray and I were curious about people around the schools’ favorite candies, but that’s boring, so we decided to torture people with crazy candy flavors! Since, it’s almost Halloween candy is practically the best subject to write on! We scoured the internet for the best worst flavored candies, but most of them wouldn’t be in on time, so plan B: Kroger and Cracker Barrell!

We got everything from hot dog flavored gummies to pumpkin spice sodas, so let’s see what some of your classmates thought! First, 6th grader Ainsley Cutler gave sour cubes a 10 out of 10 and said they were the best ones! She said the worst was the Lemon gummies discussed as French fries. She gave those a 0/10.

Next, Emma Schrier tried gave the lemon gummies that Ainsley hated a 9 out of 10! She loved the sour cubes and her least favorite was the cow tails. She also fairly enjoyed the pumpkin soda giving it a 7/10.

Personally, I enjoyed the pumpkin spice soda and the peach gummies. The sour boogers were way to sour for me, but the gummy hot dogs were really good!

Thanks for looking at this article! Maybe you can try some of these for yourself one day! As always be respectful, responsible, and ready lynx! Have a haunted Halloween!

It may be easier to buy a holiday flight this year!

Hello, welcome back, this article is about a flying for thanksgiving. We know with Thanksgiving right around the corner, you may be planning to book a flight to go visit family and friends, to go see grandparents, family, etc. When you’re in an airplane at 30,000 feet, many people assume there’s no fresh air. But that's not true. Airplanes aren’t hermetically sealed environments. This is probably why not many people fly on airplanes on a regular basis, especially in this day an age of COVID 19. This is because of the perception that they don’t get a lot of food and fresh air. Well, some people are scared to be on planes, that saying is because planes can crash, with many people dead (It also can sink causing you to drown in the plane, etc.) On a given year, travel experts say one to three months in advance is best for booking domestic flights, but the good news is this year you may have more flexibility even if you haven't booked yet. This is a good thing because people may need to fly to somewhere for a death in the family, etc. Travel experts say this year, they are seeing a lot more last-minute fares than in years past.

Adding on to the air thing, during a flight, fresh air outside the plane is being continuously being circulated into the cabin through complex vents to the engine, this shows that most of the fresh air is not transferred into the plane (Inside). In addition to bringing in fresh air from the outside, planes have hospital-grade air filters to purify the air onboard. These High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters cycle the air every few minutes, capturing 99.97% of airborne particles. This shows that if you don’t have a lot of air, you can die. Therefore, they use these hospital-grade air filters.

The odds of snagging a cheap flight decrease the closer it gets to Thanksgiving, especially if your dates and destination are not flexible. By early September, the window for cheap Thanksgiving flights (and even- Christmas and New Year’s) is closing fast. Only a few times a flight is about 5,000 to 1,000$, and that’s why people are trying to go everywhere, because they flights are inexpensive (1,000-6,500$ MAX)

In most years, Thanksgiving is a bit of an anomaly among the holidays when it comes to international deals. If you’re looking to travel domestically, with millions of your fellow Americans visiting family at the exact same time, it can be expensive and a holiday-booking strategy should apply (e.g. start watching prices as early as possible). These flights when like you are trying to see family, etc. Get expensive because a lot of people get on the same plane etc. That’s why you should always watch the price.

Overall lynx, it will be easier to get a flight for thanksgiving this year! Thank you for reading and stay tuned for next week’s news article!

Cafeteria Food and Item Shortage

Have you noticed that your school cafeteria hasn’t had some of your favorite food or breakfast items? There are many reasons for these shortages. All the problems begin with the food provider. There is a lack of employees to manufacture or transport the food. There are the same issues for Bon Lin Middle. The Cafeteria Manager Mrs. Young said, “It is people getting to the orders before us. People are ordering from the same source. If they are shorthanded at the supply warehouse, it affects everything else.” Some people can order the items before others can get them.

It is not only food items. They could be short on employees in the cafeteria, or there is a lack of trays and utensils. The employee shortage can affect how fast food can be prepared, and the utensils and trays can affect how many people can be fed. The price on the trays has also risen. For example, Mrs. Young said, “So far it has been the paper plates. The other issue is that the price on these products has increased. A box of trays was $30, and now it is around $100. The demand is so high, so the price increased. The director has asked us to find alternatives, and not be too wasteful with the products. She wanted us to double the number of items because they could not have it.” Mrs. Young only has a total of 4 employees, including herself. She had two that did not want to come back at the beginning. In conclusion, these school lunches are a very important part of some students day.

Bartlett Considering Virtual Programs for Quarantined Students

Hey Lynx! Today I want to tell you that Bartlett is Considering a Virtual Programs for Quarantined Students.

Bartletts Board of Education members are now expected to consider adding a temporary virtual education program for students that were exposed to (Covid) at its Thursday, Aug. 26 meeting. This discussion comes as the Delta variant’s rises to the latest Covid-19 surge throughout Shelby County with pediatric cases increasing very quickly and vastly. If you compare this to the other previous surges in the pandemic, this is the worst we have had of Covid. Jason Sykes at BCS communications and outreach coordinator said Wednesday, “If a student has to quarantine due to COVID, we don’t have to mark them absent during that period.” He also said, “We can place that student in this virtual program where they would still be able to receive instruction while they are in this quarantine period.” The BCS school board will discuss this at there meeting on Thursday. Sykes then added it’s, because BCS is only offering this to students quarantining from COVID-19, and not for all of its nearly 8,500 students DISTRICT-WIDE. One of the BCS schools (Bon Lin Middle) has 140 that has been quarantined since the start of school, then less than 10 have been quarantined more than once. So, with these numbers. If every school is like this we are looking at schools having to go virtual again.

What do you think should happen? I hope that the BCS board can figure it out. Have a great rest of your day Lynx‼

Online Chatting Gone Wrong - From Alicia Kozakiewicz to “Megan is Missing “Here are some real-life crime stories and how you can keep yourself safe online.

By: Kairee Chapman

Have you ever had trouble making friends in reality? Well today’s society , it’s easy to make friends at the touch of your fingertips. The disturbing reality, however, is that majority of the time people you meet online are not say they are or have the intentions they say. Here are some real-life stories of online chatting gone wrong and what you can do to stay safe

“Megan is Missing” is a 2011 thriller movie based off the real-life kidnapping of Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis. In real life, on Jan. 9, 2002, Ashley Pond went missing from her bus stop in Oregon City after chatting online with the kidnapper’s daughter, Mallory, who was the girl’s mutual friend. In the months between Ashley Ponds disappearance, Miranda begins to advocate and investigate her friend Ashley’s disappearance on media outlets. As this is happening, kidnapper Ward Weaver grew angry and planned to abduct Miranda. On March 8, 2002, 13-year-old   Miranda Gaddis is abducted in a similar manner as Ashley. On August 24, the remains of the two girls were found inside a box, and in a barrel underneath a concrete slab. Kidnapper Ward Weaver was later arrested and given 13 charges. In the movie, the events of the real-life case play out in a similar way, as well as going more in depth on what happened to the girls while they were in captivity though video tapes, online chats, and text messages.

On Jan .1,2002, 13-year-old Alicia Kozakiewicz was abducted from her home in Pittsburgh by a 38-year-old man that had groomed her for months online posing as a 14-year-old boy. Alicia was driven to the man’s estate in Herndon, Virginia. What Alicia recalls, what happened next was unimaginable. “I was chained by the neck, sexually assaulted, and my torture was live-streamed. Terrified, knowing that the man would soon kill me, I struggled to maintain hope that I would be found. “ . A few days later, the FBI obtained a clue from an online informant who happened to see the live-streamed video. After following digital footprints and other investigations, the FBI raided identified kidnapper Scott Tyree’s estate and charged him with kidnapping, assault, and exploitation of a minor. Today, Alicia advocates for her own organization, “The Alicia Project “, and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

With these kidnapping cases in mind, you are probably thinking, “I should never talk to anyone online every again! “Well, there nothing wrong with chatting with people online as long as you know the red flags to stay safe. Some red flags include: The person refuses to show their face, they only want to text and never call, they look older than they say they are, or they constantly compliment you or talk in a groom - like way. If any of the above thing occur, be sure to try to cut the relationship off in a non - toxic way. Say things like, “Oh I got to go “and block them, or simply just leave the call and never return.  Turn your location of asap and go alert a grown up.

All in All, Lynx, it’s a crazy world out there both in real life and online.  Be sure to take these tips with you when meeting people online. Stay tuned for next week’s feature article and as always, be respectful, responsible, and ready!

Go on an Autumn Walk

  By: Isaiah Shoemaker

Hello Lynx! Today I’m back with another awesome article! Today I want to talk to you about the things to do when you go on a “Autumn Walk”.

An Autumn walk is great way to see and explore what this great season has to offer. It also provides a great opportunity for learning, fun and exercise, so wrap up[MTD1] [MTD2]  warm and get outdoors.

The first thing you need to do is get your carrier bags/baskets and venture outdoors (no matter what the weather), to see what beautiful changes this season has to offer. Collect Autumn leaves, twigs, conkers[MTD3] , acorns, pinecones (these will come in useful for some of the activities mentioned below too).

Point out any interesting things along your way – spider webs covered in dew, mushrooms, squirrels foraging for food, droplets sitting on the nature bed. Take some photos to look at when you return home.

The Shooting at the Memphis Postal shooting (UPDATE)

Hey, Lynx! The US Postal Inspection Service on Thursday officially deified the suspects that were accused of the deadly triple shooting at the post office off “Orange Mound”. Two postal workers were found dead at the East Lamar Carrier Annex on Park Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect later turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. The suspects were identified as the following, 47-yr-old James Wilson Jr., 37-yr-old Demetria Drouth, and 28-yr-old Johntra Haley. Wilson was a station manager, and Drouth was a supervisor with customer service.

According to USPS, Wilson had been hired to them since 2001, and Drouth had been hired to them since 2015. Tracey (The mom of Johntra) reported that her son was the one who shot and killed the two USPS co-workers, on Tuesday at a sorting facility in Memphis. She later said, “He was a church going person. It’s just that the people at the job was bullying him”. She also said, “My son went to that job faithfully every day, worked long hours comes home stressed because they’re talking to him and kind of way”.

Later, Haley spoke to an AP journalist to for questioning at the apartment complex where her son lived. The inspectors declined the comment.

Later, a client at the apartments said this, “The person who did that yesterday was not who he was,” I hope you enjoy my article. Have a great day Lynx!

The Month of Giving

As most of you all know November is known as the month of giving. This is because of the holiday Thanksgiving, but people give all month long. Some people may donate items to different organizations, and other people may volunteer to different places.  Today we’ll be talking about different places you can give to.

One place you can donate to is Salvation Army. Salvation Army accepts clothing for men, women, infants, and children. They also take recordings, compacts discs, jewelry, shoes, purses, accessories, books, collectibles, jewelry, small antiques, sheets, blankets, pillowcases, towels, dishes, and pans.  The dishes and pans must be clean and free of damage, and the clothes must be gently used. Everything else must be gently used and undamaged. They also take lamps, radios, and television sets if they're working. However, the TVs can’t be older than five years. Cell phones, laptops, computers, and other electronic devices are accepted, but you must clear everything from it first. They also welcome washers, refrigerators, stoves, and air conditioners, but they must be free of rust and in good working condition, including a power cord. They take wood furniture if it’s in good shape. Some goes with, leather or fabric upholstered furniture, box springs, and mattresses. Some other stuff they take include counters and shelves for store displays, gardening equipment, farm equipment, tools, treadmills, bicycles, ski machines, Cars, recreational vehicles, trucks, and boats. As you can tell Salvation Army takes a lot of stuff, and if you want to donate to some place this is a great place to donate.

Another place you can donate to is Goodwill. Goodwill welcomes vehicles, clothing, shoes, boots, jewelry, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, books, records, CDs, videotapes, DVDs, games, toys, sports equipment, dishes, glassware, kitchen utensils, lamps, small appliances, collectibles, antiques, knickknacks, giftware, hand tools, small power tools, linens, curtains, blankets, CPUs, flat-screen monitors, hard drives, laptops, cell phones, VCRs, DVD players, TVs, and anther items. All items must be in good condition and working for them to take it. Goodwill is like Salvation Army, but Salvation Army takes furniture and gadgets while Goodwill takes more clothes and toys. If you have anything you are wanting to donate, Goodwill is a good place to go.

Some other places you can donate to include  Habitat for Humanity, Pickup Please/ Vietnams of America, AMVETS National Service Foundation, Planet Aid, Animal Shelters, Furniture Bank Network, PickUpMyDonation, Donation Town, Career Gear, One Warm Coat, Soles4Souls, Becca’s Closet, Stuffed Animals For Emergencies, Baby2Baby, Local Nurseries, Pregnancy Centers, Operation Paperback, Better World Books, Local Libraries, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, National Cristina Foundation, Cell Phones For Soldiers, Volunteers of America, National Kidney Foundation, and Donate A Car. All these places take different stuff, so if you want to donate to one of these places make sure to look up what they take. For all the places the items need to be in good shape. If you’re interested in donating somewhere make sure they accept what you are donating.

One place that holds events to help the community is Memphis Rox. Memphis Rox is up to all ages; although if you want to volunteer you have to register through Volunteer Odyssey. Once you are registered you are welcomed to any event they hold.  Some events they hold include juice almighty, neighborhood clean ups, and educational food garden. Juice almighty distributes no-cost lunches to the community. They hand out meals Monday through Friday from ten am through one pm. When they hold neighborhood clean ups Memphis Rox partners up with nonprofitable organizations to help keep neighborhood clean. Lastly when educational food garden introduces the youth to farming to promote nutritional eating. As you can tell, Memphis Rox has many volunteering opportunities, and if you want to volunteer somewhere, Memphis Rox is a good place to look.

Another place to investigate when trying to volunteer at is Theatre Memphis. At Theatre Memphis they have numerous volunteering opportunities such as stage manager, assistant stage manager, stage crew, floor crew, pin crew, fly crew, dresser, and spotlight technician. There are more spots than these, but these were just the first few. If you like theater and want to volunteer Theatre Memphis is a good place to go.

Some other places to volunteer at include soup kitchens, animal shelters, libraries, parks & recreation department, community centers, faith organizations, homeless shelters, and arts & cultural organizations. All these are ideas of places to volunteer at, and they all have different opportunities. If you want to volunteer somewhere make sure you are old enough to volunteer at that place because different places have different rules.

As you can conclude, there are many places to donate and volunteer at. There are numerous places you can donate to and volunteer at that we didn’t cover in this article. If you want to donate or volunteer somewhere make sure that they take the stuff you’re donating, or that you’re old enough for the organization.

Late Buses

Why are so many buses late to school? This year, a lot of schools are experiencing bus issues around the country, and there are many reasons for these late buses. In Bartlett, bus issues are caused by the bus provider. The bus provider for Bartlett is Durham School Services. “Buses have been late because Durham, Bartlett City Schools has a contract with Durham, and Durham is short Bus drivers. The Bus drivers left to start working for another company, so there is not anything the schools can do because there is a shortage of Bus drivers,” said the assistant principal Ms. Shelton. Another reason the buses are late is because the drivers must take multiple routes. Because of the driver shortage, the bus drivers must double the number of students they have to take. For example, my bus had to pick up another bus before picking up 176.

These late buses can also affect the students and their education. Because of some buses being late every day, the students miss out on the same class every day. The teachers then must make sure the student/students know what is happening. As a student at Wayland High School in Massachusetts stated, "Getting to class late is kind of frustrating, even though it’s not my fault it’s saying something about me as a student when I am late. I know that teachers understand that it’s the bus and it’s probably frustrating for them too.” The bus can also affect a student’s schedule. As Ms. Shelton stated, “In the afternoon, some students have activities outside of school. They may have church or play other sports, so it’s an inconvenience to the parents to have to pick the kids up so they can participate in these extra activities.” In conclusion, we see how much students may take buses for granted, and it shows that school buses are an important part of students.

Mrs.Turpen is Leaving!?

Welcome back lynx! This week we have some sad news. 8th grade math teacher Mrs.Turpen will soon be moving to Nashville.  In Nashville Mrs.Turpen plans to continue her education by going back to school to get her administration license. She will be teaching 7th and 8th grade at Hawkins Middle School. She will miss her 8th grade team most of all. Mrs. Turpen says her advice for her students would be to work ahead, not behind. Next, I interviewed Keith Woody who is in her 8th grade math class. Mrs. Turpen is his favorite teacher. His favorite thing about Mrs. Turpen is that she is willing to help him. Keith thinks Mrs. Turpen is helpful and he doesn’t feel good about her leaving. He says she has impacted his life for the better. In conclusion, we will miss Mrs.Turpen very much and we wish her well starting off fresh in Nashville.

Tickets for “Spider Man: No Way Home” Are Overloaded!!!

This week’s article is a little exciting, because it is about the new movie Spider Man: No Way Home which comes out on December 17. The topic is how the tickets are overloaded People are ready to see it; this may be a big hit for Tom Holland (Spider Man and Peter Parker- Actor). Without further ado, let’s get to some information and the basic things of this movie.

So, to begin, On the CNN Business site, it stated that “Fans complained on social media Monday that ticket sites such as (AMC) were backed up.” This may cause the tickets to get sold out. It is possible that they did that because people were posting on social media.

Now, let’s look at the other movies. Spider Man: Far from Home is when the bad guy named Mysterio reveals on television that Peter Parker was Spider Man. Nobody knew until Mysterio said it before he died. Now, (Tw: spoiler alert) Spider Man and Doctor Strange must work together to adventure another universe where people don’t know Peter Parker is Spider Man.

Malco theaters are already selling tickets in mass quantities for the movie, which is why the tickets are overloaded. Another thing about the movie stated by The Hollywood Reporter, “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel — [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie.” After past Spider Man movies years back, they said they were done with Spider Man, and look at today, they made like 5 extra Spider Man movies, it must end somewhere someday. A crazy saying by them (The Hollywood Reporter), they said “We’re thinking of this as three films, which they are basically saying they are making three more Spider Man movies. “And now we’re going to go on to the next three.” In a statement from a Hollywood Reporter that you may get a kick out of, “No Way Home debuts Dec. 17 and follows Homecoming (2017) and far from home (2019), which earned $1.1 BILLION worldwide and stands as Sony’s highest-grossing film ever!” Crazy, right?

Finally, here is a paragraph of information “Sony, which has long controlled the film rights to Spider-Man, the main company that takes care of marvel-made five films starring the hero from 2002-14. This had a different actor, three directed by Sam Raimi and two from filmmaker Marc Webb. In 2015, a year after Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) underperformed at the box office, Marvel and Sony unveiled an unprecedented partnership that allowed Spider-Man to appear in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War (2016), Which probably worked together to defeat the bad guys, this also was when Spider Man the actor with Tom Holland started. Would see Feige and Marvel produce a series of Spider-Man films released by Sony. The deal not only put Spider-Man in the MCU, but it also made him a central figure and allowed him to interact with its other characters, including a major role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

That’s it for this week! I hope you enjoyed this Spiderman themed article! Stay tune for next week’s news article!

How To Make “Christmas Sugar Cookies”

 By: Isaiah Shoemaker

`Let’s kick off the holiday baking season with classic decorated Christmas cookies. Nothing beats Christmas sugar cookies made from scratch and I know you’ll love this recipe. We’re using a classic sugar cookie and dressing them up for the holidays.

Trust me when I say this is a recipe you might want to try. The cookies maintain their cookie cutter shape while baking and have a nice flat surface for decorating. There are no crazy ingredients, so this recipe is easy and approachable for everyone.

This is a recipe that requires planning ahead. First, the cookie dough needs to chill. Chilling is a mandatory step. Before decorating the baked cookies, make sure the cookies are completely cool. If they are not completely cool, the icing will melt. To completely harden on top of the cookies, the icing needs at least 24 hours to set.

I hope that you learned something from this article. See you Lynx for another “Christmassy” article next week. Bye!

How to prevent your packages from getting stolen

By, Emma Ray

There have been many reports of packages being stolen. In this weeks article we’ll be talking about how to keep your packages from being stolen this holiday season. Say you’re on a vacation, and you’re getting a package that day. One way you can keep your package from being stolen is by asking a trusted neighbor to get it for you. This way it won’t be sitting out for a long period of time, and it won’t be stolen. Anther way you can keep your packages safe is by getting a ring doorbell. Ring doorbells have cameras built in it; people will most likely not take your package if they know they’re on camera. However, if you package gets taken you can show the cops the video, and everything will be worked out from there. One final way is to get a dog. This is the one that is least effective, but the dog might just scar them off. You never know. If you put all these ideas together it’s very unlikely that your package will be taken. As you can conclude, There are many ways to keep your packed save.
