Omicron: What’s next for us in these trying times?
Answers to your questions and all the latest updates on the omicron variant and all its effects
As this new covid variant takes over our world once more, there are many questions to be asked and not all news sources are reliable. In this article you will get the max amount of information and the cold hard facts about the omicron variant as well as others.
What is the Omicron variant?
The Omicron Variant is just another type of the Coronavirus like the Delta variant. Some are worse than others and as of now the Omicron seems to be a milder version compared to others. Although it can spread rapidly and is easier to catch, the symptoms are typically not as bad as Delta and others. The variant was declared as the newest variant in December of 2021 and was first reported by South Africa to the World Health Organization on November 24, 2021.
What Should I do if I am exposed?
If you are exposed to any variant of the Coronavirus, you should wear a mask in public and around others for 10 days from the date of exposure. If possible, you should get a test on the fifth day of exposure. These guidelines are highly recommended regardless of your vaccination status. If you start experiencing symptoms of the virus, you should get a test and immediately quarantine until you get your test results.
Who is making the decisions on guidelines and mandates?
As most of us know the CDC, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is making most of the guidelines and rules for Covid-19, but because all situations are different for states, cities, counties, and school systems a lot of decisions are made within these political bodies by local governments. A lot of decisions are simply left up to the public as too whether they want to follow certain guidelines.
What are some reliable news sources can follow to stay safe and stay up to date on the latest news?
According to mitchellsny.com newspapers are the most reliable news source. In the first paragraph of this blog it states, “According to the Institute for Public Relations’ most recent Disinformation in Society Report, newspaper journalists rank as the least-biased, most reliable news source in the eyes of the American population. Even more telling, local newspapers were cited as the most trustworthy source of news in today’s ever-contentious media landscape.” Even though newspapers may not be the most modern or the easiest way to get news, they are certainly the most reliable and least biased. Many newspapers have a website that can make it easier for you and others to get news.
Are vaccines safe?
In Tennessee 51.4% of people are fully vaccinated. As far as safety goes, this is a very controversial topic. Even though vaccines are not yet required, just over half of Tennessee’s population is fully vaccinated. Side effects are normal after your first and second shot. They should only last a couple of days, but this is just a sign that your body is building up protection against the virus. According to the CDC, you should get vaccinated regardless of whether you have had the virus or not. Most people and websites say they feel that the vaccine is safe, but it is still up to you as an individual as to if you choose to be vaccinated or not. If you have questions, it is best to talk to your doctor and get their opinion on what’s right for you.
Where can I get a Covid-19 test?
With the surge in the omicron variant, needs for Covid-19 tests are through the roof. You can get at home tests or on-site tests at most any pharmacy such as Walgreens or CVS. At home tests run for an average of $15 each, although since tests are in such high demand, some places are selling them for as high as $100!
I hope this article gave you some information you needed. If you have any other questions about Covid-19, ask your doctor or go to www.CDC.gov for answers.

Why your Cloth masks may not protect against the new variant! Are people being accepting?
Welcome back to another article! We’re all trying to be as safe as possible right now, But
Did you know that your cloth mask may not protect against the omicron and any other following variants? Keep reading to find out the why!
The main reason is the amount of layering. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Single-layer cloth masks, which the many people prefer for comfort and style, can block larger droplets carrying the virus, but aren’t as effective in blocking smaller aerosols or particles carrying the virus, according to infectious-disease specialists. Instead, the article recommends a K95 mask as” KN95 masks have a filter layer made of polypropylene, which is a type of plastic, they are effective at trapping small particles. The extra layer provides a higher level of protection against Covid-19 when compared to cloth or surgical masks. “
So, are people accepting this growing fact? According to USA TODAY,” Most people are still wearing cloth masks. Here’s why that’s a problem.” the article went on to urge,” Cloth masks are not going to cut it for omicron. “In an article by the Atlantic “People are just divided into either you’re masked or you’re not. And that would be like saying everything that has wheels”—including a tricycle and a jetliner— “is the same. “Overall, people aren’t taking this very well .
In conclusion, that’s all you need to know about the new mask guidelines! Stay tuned for next week’s article and as always, be respectful, responsible, and ready!
Flu Uprising|How will it affect the new year?
You may have heard about the rise of the new strand of COVID, Omicron. Along with the rise of Omicron, there is also a rise in Flu cases. The Flu could put more people in the hospital and make it even harder on hospital employees. There was an all-time low in flu cases due to people protecting themselves from COVID last year. Media outlets and health officials have also predicted that flu cases could rise rapidly in states that are not mandating covid protocols.
One of the main questions is how both diseases will affect the new year. A lot of kids here at Bon Lin have been quarantined due to covid, and some students and staff are sick with the Flu. CNN stated that, “Doctors are divided on whether kids should go back to in person class. “Doctors who want children to go in person want them to be vaccinated before returning. Pfizer stated that their booster is more effective, but the other two doses are less effective. Thank you for reading this week’s article. As for relevance, “But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good for you, you’re changing the structure of your life, you’re bringing people into your life who will reinforce that resolution, then I think you have a fighting chance.” (Dr Bennet via New York times). Finally on the matter of Achievability, “But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you frustrated or affect other areas of your life to the point that your resolution takes over your life — and both you and your friends and family flail. “(Dr Bennet via New York times).
